COST Open Call for Science & Technology networks
COST has been contributing – since its creation in 1971 – to closing the gap between science, policy makers and society throughout Europe and beyond. COST plays a very important role in building a European Research Area (ERA).
In order to achieve its mission, COST endeavours to:
- Build capacity by connecting high-quality scientific communities in Europe and worldwide
- Provide networking opportunities for Early Stage Researchers (ESR)
- Increase research impact on policy makers, regulatory bodies and national decision makers as well as on the private sector.
COST does not fund research itself, but provides support for networking activities carried out within COST Actions. COST Actions are bottom-up science and technology networks open to researchers and stakeholders , with a four-year duration and a minimum participation of seven COST Member States out of 36. Danube region is represented by 12 countries as COST Member States. COST Actions arealso open to international cooperation, by allowing the participation of researchers from 17 Near Neighbour Countries (e.g. Moldova and Ukraine from the Danube Region) and 29 International Partner Countries on the basis of mutual benefit.
COST Actions are active through a range of networking tools, such as meetings, workshops, conferences, training schools, short-term scientific missions (STSMs) and dissemination activities. COST Actions are open to researchers from universities, public and private research institutions, as well as to NGOs, industry and SMEs.
COST invites researchers throughout Europe to submit proposals for COST Actions through a continuous Open Call. Following a thorough evaluation and selection process, the decision for funding a proposal is taken within eight months from the collection date. Successful proposals are approved to become COST Actions and can expect to ‘kick-off’ within three months thereafter. The 20th of April 2018 have been anounced as the next collection date of COST. Researchers can also apply to join an existing COST Action or become involved in various COST Action activities.
Some COST Action examples approved at the year 2017 and relevant to EUSDR PA5 objectives involving researchers from Danube countries as well:
- Natural Flood Retention on Private Land
- Harmonization of UAS techniques for Agricultural and Natural Ecosystems Monitoring
- Knowledge Conversion for Enhancing Management of European Riparian Ecosystems and Services
