JOINTISZA PROJECT 2ND AD-HOC TASK GROUP MEETING AND SHARED VISION PLANNING STAKEHOLDER WORKSHOP WAS HELD IN SZOLNOK (HUN)
On 23 May the 2nd Ad-Hoc Task Group Meetingtook place in Szolnok towards the development of a “Guidance paper on climate change induced specific water quantity issues to overcome challenges”.
In the 2011 Integrated Tisza River Basin Management Plan three water quantity related management aspects were specified: 1) flood and excess water events, 2) drought and water scarcity and 3) alerting climate conditions. At the meeting experts discussed the draft content of the Guidance document, identifying the main focus of their future work.
The DriDanube project pilot activity carrying out in Vojvodina (SRB) part of the Tisza Basin also have been presented by the representatives of the University of Novi Sad in order to find the possible synergies among the two transnational projects.
On 24 May the JOINTISZAShared Vision Planning Pilot Methodology and Stakeholder Workshop on climate change were seeking to address specific water quantity issues, based on the methodology developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), which pays special attention to stakeholder involvement.. More than 70 experts participated, coming from Hungary, Slovakia, Serbia, Romania, the US and Italy.
The results of “The Water-Energy-Flood-Environment Nexus – Future Scenarios for the Danube River Basin” with special focus on water resources were introduced. Attention was called to that, if countries do not stick to the Paris Agreement adopted in December 2015, number of flood events will increase and low flow events will even be more extreme, in line with water scarcity problems getting more serious. As a conclusion, our situation in the Danube River Basin could also get worse, including the Tisza River Basin. It was highlighted that JRC results can be utilised for the development of the pilot study in the Tisza River Basin.
One of the sessions was held by the experts of US Army Corps of Engineers, focusing on the lessons learnt from the 1st Shared Vision Planning Pilot Methodology and Stakeholder Workshop held in October 2017. The importance of the stakeholder involvement in technical analysis was emphasized, behind which the idea is that water resources work as a system and due to their involvement people can understand how the system functions. Finally, presentation on the pilot activity and discussion with the participating experts (i.e. including the agriculture, forestry fileds etc.) followed.
