The waste pollution on river Tisza is a huge environmental problem! The PLASTIC Cup, this non-profit, non-governmental initiative, was created to eliminate this problem. This environmental action contributes to clean river Tisza by organizing events, waste collection campaigns spanning several months, team-building activities, exhibitions and professional discussions throughout the year. The three main goals of the PLASTIC Cup: conservation of living waters, water sports promotion (kayaking, canoeing) and community building.
During the PLASTIC CUP, boats were built from waste from Tisza, which were achieved the PLASTIC boat title if they meet the rules applied to them. After the PLASTIC boats are built, they went through the test of the water-police: were they fit for the trip.
Due to the pandemic caused situation the 8th PLASTIC Cup was held amid special safety regulations betwen the 1-9 August 2020. Though compare to last year much less competitors took part in the event, they collected the same amount of plastic waste. During the 8th PLASTIC Cup participants approximately collected 8 tonnes of waste from the Tisza and its floodplains, which is quiet impressive.
The collected plastic waste were sorted and forwarded to the next step of recycling. With this method at least the half of the collected plastic waste will be recycled, same like previous years.
PA5 supported the initiative and even took part in the event as member of the GWP (Global Water Partnership) Team and achieved 3rd place.
Further informations about this initiative, pictures and articles about the event are available on the PLASTIC Cup’s website.
